Protein packed power balls – Maalaadu

By Vanita, July 25, 2013

Sugar rush? Man’s worst enemy is the ‘white sugar’. Brown sugar, palm sugar take a priority in my kitchen. Maalaadu is a popular bakshanam from Tirunelveli, I was taught how to make this simple sweet by Nags (who happens to be my hubby) maternal Grand Mom. It’s a killer of a recipe I say. Her measurements were very simple – she would say “cheriku – cheri” which meant equal amounts of flour to sugar. Well, slight twist to Patti’s recipe – white sugar substituted with brown sugar and also reduced ghee.

Recipe:
Makes 14 laddoos
1 cup Roasted gram flour/ powder pottukadalai
1 cup brown sugar (then powder it)
3-4 cardamom / elaichi powdered
A little over 1/4 cup melted ghee
1/4 cup chopped nuts (cashew, almonds)
Pistachios / slivered almonds to decorate
  • Mix the roasted gram flour, sugar, elaichi.
  • Add the roasted nuts and melted butter
  • Make them into a ball using both your hands.
  • Garnish with Pistachios or slivered almonds
I have pictures of the ones made with brown sugar (last one, not so great looking) and palm sugar!
